Louza* of Mykonos

Louza of Mykonos is a very characteristic and delicious snack which competes in terms of preference, for those who have tried the Greek delicacies, with the –also famous– sausages of Mykonos.
This is a traditional type of cooked pork meat which is produced by homegrown veal and includes the whole of the fillet from the back of the animal with the bit of the fat that covers it. This dries up and is “broiled” by the north wind of the beginning of winter and the sun, prepared with a lot of salt, pepper and other spices (thribi). After it has well seasoned that way, louza can be preserved for as much time as we want in the freezer, so that it won’t lose its freshness after it has dried.
It is served as a delicacy, cut in thin slices which take the colour of dark rosy red and leave all its tastiness and rich aroma to the mouth. This is the ‘delicatessen’ of Mykonian gastronomy.
The small louza, which is made from the other back muscle of the hog – “porterhouse” –, is even softer and is called “bouboulo”.
* Lonza, in the Italian South. In Cyprus, it is known as “lountza”.

Kopanisti of Mykonos

Kopanisti of Mykonos is a characteristic, very spicy cheese, which the tasters appreciate for its special peppery tastiness.
It excellently accompanies ouzo and any other strong Greek aperitif, on bread or –in the Mykonian way– on sop barley rusk, together with tomatoes or cucumber. It can also be mixed with butter or some other white cheese to produce a lighter taste, but then the mixture cannot be preserved.
Kopanisti is the result of a controlled and repeated fermentation which is done through the care of the traditional cheesemaker on a base of a homemade mixed cheese (from goat and sheep milk), which is easily preserved after maturing in an earthen or glass jar.
Its making is also known to other Cyclades islands, but it is far different than the kopanisti of Mykonos which is largely considered as a very strong and aromatic one.

more: Mykonos

Murders don't happen in tourist heaven; at least that's what he's thinking as he stares at the remains of a young woman found ritually bound and buried on a pile of human bones inside a remote mountain church. Just when it seems things can't get any worse, bodies, bones, and suspects start turning up almost everywhere he looks-and another victim disappears. With his investigation suddenly a rescue operation, Andreas finds himself plunging into ancient myths and forgotten island places in a race toward a shattering finale.

"Jeffrey Siger sees Mykonos through the eyes of a tourist and as a resident for 25 years. But most of all he looks at the island as a writer, crafting a tale of intrigue and suspense against a scenic background.
His knowledge of the terrain is matched by his love for the people and all their quirks… Murder in Mykonos is a hugely enjoyable read. Both disturbing and compelling, it delivers colorful, creepy fun through characters you hope will be back for many more books."
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Murder in Mykonos will be available right after Easter 2008 throughout Greece in all the major bookstores

Biography
JEFFREY SIGER was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He received degrees in political science and biology from Washington and Jefferson College, and in law from Boston College Law School (together with the academic honor, Order of the Coif).

He began practicing law at a major Wall Street law firm. While there, he helped establish New York City's leading organization for private-practice lawyers seeking to volunteer for public service, and served as Special Counsel to the citizens group responsible for reporting on New York City's prison conditions.
His investigation into a politically charged suicide in one of its jails resulted in a report The New York Times covered as its lead, front page story, and Newsweek magazine called the greatest example of the newest form of unofficial art, the Investigative Report.
He left Wall Street to join his own New York City law firm. There he continued as one of its name partners-litigating high-stakes society scandals and other delicate public and private matters of domestic and international consequence-until giving it all up to write full-time among the people, life, and politics of his beloved Mykonos, and spearfish in its Aegean waters.

In this, his debut novel, he paints a vivid portrait of his adopted island of twenty-five years as the backdrop for his satisfyingly complex plot. His other home is a farm outside New York City.

Cover and book layout by Ersilia Bachauer
Cover design by Jonathan Siger
Cover photograph by Nikos Anastasiou
Author photograph by Andreas Fiorentinos
website: www.jeffreysiger.com

One of the Cyclades, a group of Greek islands with beautiful white sandy beaches, rugged mountains and lush valleys, Mykonos is a cosmopolitan haven. As its popularity has increased and Mykonos has become more expensive, strict regulations have ensured that the island keeps its picture perfect vistas of whitewashed walls. More than 300 days of sunshine plus turquoise skies and seas add to the idyllic scenery.
It is an island made by Gods for people.
Who hasn’t have something to say about Mykonos, who hasn’t swim in its vast boundless blue waters, who hasn’t have lived unforgettable moments…
Mykonos, the sea, the sky, the sun, the hospitality, the fun, the harmony, the charm. A never-ending real myth surrounding us, every part of it a reality, something special, challenging you to live it, taste it, relish it.
An barren island, arid, burned by the sun but full of golden beaches and crystal waters. The white color, the stone and the scattered mountains are indelible memories in the mind.
The natural elements are vivid and strong, filling you, guiding you in new sensations; the air, the sun, the moon are the eternal guides.
The harmony of the Mykonian architecture is really astonishing. The location and the way the Chora (town) of Mykonos is build -inside the Northern eye- the port, the particular colors, it is an exceptional masterpiece. No man and no plan would be able to create something so unique. The feeling of getting lost in the alleys is fascinating. The exit to the seashore is where we end our walk, with a glass of ouzo and the view of man or boats.
You walk and think that you know everybody…you wave and they wave back. As if you have grown up in this neighborhood. Everything is simple, familiar, hospitable. A warm and relaxing atmosphere. Hospitality and a hug are something you can take with you and carry it forever.
And when the sun sets the mood changes. The rhythm becomes vibrant, fast, full of fantasy and intensity.
You can experience everything you want, as much as you want it, as much as you can handle it. Everything is nearby, just beside you, you only make the choice.
You simply choose to come to Mykonos.
